Afternoon concer tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. held at the Oak Park Arms retirement community. An afternoon concert will pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at the Oak Park Arms, 408 S. Oak Park Ave.

Most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation and efforts for racial equality, Martin Luther King, Jr. was an influential American civil rights leader.

As an advocate for non-violent protests and his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, he became the youngest man to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

Shortly after his assassination in 1968, a campaign was started to turn his birthday into a holiday in his honor. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was first observed in 1986, but it wasn’t acknowledged by all states until the year 2000.
